Grace Haywood

If you think about the course of your life, there are usually a few people who stand out for the influence they've had. And generally, we can name one special person that is unforgettable. Maybe you remember his kindness, gentleness, or caring spirit. There is a special woman in the lives of many people in the New Kensington area, and she has been making a lasting impression on local citizens during her 83 years.

One day, after retiring from the Social Security Office in New Kensington, about 20 years ago, Grace Haywood said, "I felt the Lord was saying, This is where I want you to make your life count." She immediately accepted a position with the Salvation Army Church in New Kensington. Today she faithfully receives donations for the Salvations Army at the Giant Eagle in New Kensington.

Grace said she has met many wonderful people over the years that she prays for regularly. Many people approach her after they are done grocery shopping and ask her to pray for them. Grace said, "People tell me things that they would not tell anyone else." She promises to pray for them and encourages them that God will give them strength in their life.

In the time Grace has been working at the store, quite a relationship has developed between her, the customers and employees of Giant Eagle. Her whereabouts are always questioned if she doesn't show up on any given day.

At this time in her life, Grace enjoys the work that she can do for her neighbors in New Kensington. She believes it is important for be there for the people who need her. She plans to continue until, as she puts it, "the Lord calls me home."

If you would like to meet Grace, she is at the Giant Eagle in New Kensington, Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm year-round, and during the holiday season, she is there every day except Sundays. Grace is also very active in her local church.
