Fox Chapel Girls Tennis
It's one thing to go undefeated in a season. It's quite another to win 193 points out of 195 in a season. And to take the WPIAL Championship, and then win everything in the PIAA to secure the Class AAA State Championship, well, now that's an outstanding feat! The Fox Chapel Girls' Tennis team set a high-water mark for themselves in October when they vanquished Lower Merion for the state tennis title.

They became the first Fox Chapel girls' team in school history to seize a state championship, and seize they did. The Lady Foxes went 19-0 for the year. They won all their matches 5-0 but two, which were 4-1 wins. They won 193 out of 195 points all season. And they put to rest the Upper St. Clair "Curse". Fox Chapel Girls' Tennis Coach Emma Dieffenbach explains, "We've always been very strong. We've made it to the WPIAL teams, we've made it to the [WPIAL] semis and quarters and finals before, but we had a tough time beating Upper St. Clair in the past. We were able to do that this year."

Upper St. Clair has virtually owned the title, having won the WPIAL championship four years now. The Lady Foxes seem to always find themselves fighting valiantly in the WPIALs, only to fall at the hand of Upper St. Clair. Not this time. Fox Chapel ousted their old foe in the WPIAL finals, and took the Western PA tennis throne instead.

The Lady Foxes last won the WPIAL AAA crown in 1977. And this was their first time in the PIAA finals. The Girls' Tennis team becomes the third sports team to bring home to the Fox's Den a state title. Dieffenbach's club includes seven United States Tennis Association-ranked players. They will lose eight seniors from the squad this year, two of which are starters.
