Jay’s devotion as a teacher is best illustrated by the story of becoming a mentor for one of his students. When teaching fifth grade at Berkey Intermediate School for nine years, Jay always told his students that they were welcome to come talk to him at any time. One day, he saw a previous student at a football game and asked how high school was going. Upon hearing, “Not well,” Jay offered his help, and the student appeared at his classroom the next day. He began tutoring her in several subjects and checking on her progress every day. Jay’s wife also spent time as a mentor, and the threesome worked especially hard to tackle Calculus. The student became the first person from her family to graduate, and will be headed to Carlow College in a few weeks! Jay notes, “She is a great girl. My wife and I consider her a part of the family.” He was also instrumental in helping her receive several scholarships. Jay is excited about offering his assistance now to the students at Riverview.
In addition to dedication, Jay excels in the ability to encourage students. He talks with them one on one letting them know that he genuinely cares about them. “It’s pretty obvious to the kids, by the questions I ask them, that I am concerned and care about them,” relates Jay. “Being around the students and interacting with them is by far the best part of my job.”
The final outstanding characteristic Jay possesses exudes in the appreciation he expresses for those with whom he works. He functions well as a team player, recognizing and esteeming the strengths of others. He praises the Oakmont and Verona communities, saying that their level of involvement and commitment to the district is astounding. Jay goes on to describe the staff at Riverview as exceptional. “They are very interested, involved, and willing to help.” Lauding the principal, Mr. Tom Graham, Jay notes, “Mr. Graham has a tremendous grasp of the big picture.” Most of all, Jay was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the students and parents. “The kids I’ve met are very friendly and open. The parents are extremely supportive. Some have made the point to call to welcome me to the district!”
Jay enjoys spending time with his family and in several hobbies. He and his wife, Barbara, have a 23 month old daughter. They are remodeling their home, and love checking out antique shops in the area. Jay is an avid hockey player, and plays hockey on a league team. In addition, he has volunteered much of his time to start and coach for a children’s league. He also loves mountain biking.
Attending Penn State University, Jay obtained a B.S. degree in finance and worked for six years as an auditor for Melon Bank. He didn’t feel that certain elements of the job lined up with his value system, and decided that he could do his best work in teaching. He attended Duquesne University to obtain a Masters in Elementary Education and gained his Principal’s Certification through Gannon University. After teaching fifth grade for nine years in New Kensington, he served as an assistant principal for Valley Middle School. In addition, Jay worked as the director for the Math and Science Partnership, a National Science Foundation Grant. Finally, he taught one year of fifth grade in the Franklin Regional School District.
With a background in finance and in science, Jay has a wealth of experience to bring to the students at Riverview. He is honored to be a part of the district and looks forward to getting to know everyone. Meet Jay in person by watching the video interview @ http://www.alle-kiskitoday.com/webcasts/1465
