He always seemed to be working on the flow of things, including rivers and officiating sports. That strong undercurrent has carried him back into Valley High School.
Frank Campbell wrestled and played ball at Valley, graduating in 1982. His day job was with the Army Corps of Engineers as a Hydrologic Technician. He installed gauges along the rivers that measured things like water flow and height. But Campbell was also busy gauging something else in his off-hours: the ebb and flow of high school sports like basketball and football. He was a WPIAL high school ref--the guy who makes sure players' actions don't "spill" over past the rules.
"I officiated high school basketball 22 years," said Campbell, "and officiated two WPIAL Football Championships." He also was the Football Commissioner for the Allegheny Conference. Up until last year, Frank Campbell was also a Trainer for WPIAL officials. By day he may have worked to help keep an eye on how rivers flowed and make sure they didn't get out of hand, but in his off-time, he was still working to help keep an eye on how games flowed, keeping them from getting out of hand as a referee.
Then when his job as Hydrologic Technician was cut, he found himself looking for a job. But the position of Athletic Director at his hometown alma mater was open, and Frank Campbell applied for it. He started in December. Valley High School Athletic Director (A.D.) was his first A.D. position, but it fit. "Before, with the officiating, I was always in schools anyway," Campbell said. And, of course, in taking care of game scheduling, rosters, athletes, coaches, officials and media, Frank is still working to make sure everything flows.
