When a school graduates a great champion, sometimes it is a LONG time before another arises and steps out of the shadow of the former champion. But a year after Sean Clair's graduation, maybe Plum Coach Chuck Froehlich already has found a new horse that can keep the Mustangs in the Hershey corral. Sophomore smash Zach Zummo, in his first year wrestling at the high school after a stint on the ninth grade junior high team, won WPIAL gold and seized first place at 103lb. Then, in March in his first year at States, Zach proceeded to make his way to Seventh place in the tournament. Zummo ended up with a State medal and a 40-1 record on the year.

The son of Ron and Kim Zummo, Zach captured second at the Junior Olympics last year, and was in the Nationals at Fargo, North Dakota where he took third in freestyle. Helping him get this far, no doubt, has been his conditioning program. He lifts and runs anywhere from one and a half to three miles. He has a clear view of what it takes for him to be a champion. "It's trying new moves; working on stuff you haven't worked on in a while. I didn't use the underhook (a wrestling move) till this year, when I got into using underhooks in freestyle wrestling."

Zummo has apparently learned to analyze his own play and make adjustments, in this case, keeping on learning new moves…a self-responsibility that will likely keep him in the winner's circle for years to come.
