The Freeport Lady Yellow Jacket swimmers wrapped up a strong season, finishing 8th at WPIALs and sending four swimmers to States: Lauren Palko, Gail Erickson, Andrea McQueen, and Katy Screen.
Coach Gregg McQueen's Freeport Four grabbed WPIAL Bronze in the 200 Freestyle (11th in the State) and then placed 7th in the 200 Medley Relay at WPIALs.
Also medaling at WPIALs were McQueen (Silver in 100 Freestyle, Bronze in 100 Breaststroke) and Palko (fourth in 50 Freestyle and seventh in 100 Freestyle.)
Palko also finished 11th at States in the 50 Freestyle, and McQueen took 13th in the 100 Breaststroke and 16th in the 100 Free.
Coach Gregg McQueen pointed out, in regards to the 8th place WPIAL finish, "That's 8th out of 38 teams [and] that is just four girls swimming. McQueen, whose daughter, Andrea, swims for the team and medaled last year, saw the heart of a Champion up close AFTER the State Tournament.
"The key to me is confidence in your ability, confidence and mindset to beat everybody. You go into that meet having the confidence to win." The attitude displayed by his daughter right after falling in the States was key evidence. "She came home tonight after the heartbreaking loss, was determined to get ready, and went downstairs and began to work out, doing weightlifting."
That's the Heart of A Champion.
