May 01, 2006

Fox Chapel Track Coach Mark Krynicki’s boys’ track team is sitting at 4-2, with the season almost over and playoffs about to begin. They may not see post-season play as a team due to the limited amount of teams that advance into the team playoffs, but they should send several Fox athletes into the Individual Tournaments in May.

“The boys are looking pretty good,” Krynicki says. “The 4x8 team looks really strong. [Senior captains] Alex Rowland and Tom Tonti had four very strong years. Tom medaled in the WPIALs last year. His freshman year, he made it to the States in the 4x1 relay.” This year’s edition of the 4x8 team is made up of Rowland, seniors Kyle Hauber and (captain) John Knauss, and Ryan Duffy, a junior.

Others To Watch: Tonti, 400m, 200m; Rowland, 800m, 4x8 relay; Hauber, 4x8 relay; Knauss, 4x8 relay; Duffy, 4x8 relay; P. J. Hanus, captain

Krynicki has boys’ and girls’ track teams that, when it comes to the win/loss record, look almost like mirror opposites late in the season. But the record of the Lady Foxes doesn’t reflect their strength or abilities. Krynicki says, “They lost four meets by a total of 25 points.” That’s about six points each match, pretty slim losses for track meets. And it doesn’t tell the story of senior captain Mara Miller, who just set a school record in the 100m, her THIRD this year, after breaking records in the long jump and hurdles. Nor does it portray the strong performances this season by senior captain Molly Linhart who set the 800m-school record in 2005, or by captain Jen Norman, who blasted a new school record last year in the shot put. It doesn’t tell of the still unfolding career of sophomore Rachel Humphrey, a 2005 WPIAL silver medalist that went to States. No, for the track stories of these and other Lady Foxes this year, you are going to have to look to the post-season Individuals Track Championships in May to see how good they really are. Expect these girls to go way beyond their season:

Others To Watch: Miller 100m, long jump, hurdles, triple jump; Linhart, 800m, 4x8 relay; Humphrey, 3200m; Norman, shot-put; Marlee Deluca, captain
