Reading the extensive menu made it hard to decide what to eat, but I am a meat and potato (Irish, you know) person raised in New England. I went right for the Flame grilled New York Bourbon Porterhouse Steak dinner. At $11.99 for 12 ounces ($13.99 for 16 oz. and $17.99 for 24 oz.), it was a real bargain. Talking with Tim Zufall, owner, he said, “People pay $29.90 for a steak at other places and get the same steak here for much less.” Tim said steaks are their biggest sellers. There are seven steak selections starting at $7.99. I doubt you can beat those prices and get such a sumptuous meal!
Tim tells the story of a North Carolina resident that summers in this area and when he leaves North Carolina he will not eat until he gets to Carney’s. He absolutely craves the fish Carney’s serves. Tim says in the summer they bring in fresh Maryland Blue Crabs in addition to their many other fish dishes. Fish ranks as high as steaks in popularity with people coming from all over. “People come from Pittsburgh for our fish dishes,” said Tim. “Considering there are over 20 fish dishes, I can see why. Tim says they batter their own fish.
Carney’s Corner is almost a landmark after 47 years. Located at 104 W. Pittsburgh Street at Route 66 in Delmont, Tim and Maureen Zufall of Slickville bought the restaurant in 1992 and have made it a true family owned and operated restaurant. Maureen is the backbone of the restaurant and their four children, ages 9 to 20, work with them. Carney’s has significantly grown under their ownership. It was a ten seat dining room when they purchased it and today it seats over 100. There are two outside decks that seat about 30 people and they now have a banquet hall in the back that seat about 40.
Appetizers alone are one who page on the menu. How about 31 choices not including soup and chili? Dinner alone could be had with appetizers! From a pound of peel and eat shrimp to Cajun foods, BBQ fries to wings, there is more selection in appetizers to satisfy any taste. All their soups are homemade. Salads give you another ten choices. All this before you get to the serious stuff!
Carney’s has a lot of specialty and plain pizza choices, Mexican food, Calzones, Specialty subs, subs, strip style sandwiches and classic sandwiches. I think the Cajun Fish Sub is the first I’ve seen in this area. And, of course, burgers and burgers.
In addition to the steaks and fish there are the old fashioned favorites that meat and potato lovers such as me fall for. Add to that a variety of chicken meals and you can see why I said it was an extensive menu. On top of all this are the everyday specials that are a fixture at Carney’s. Three of those days feature an all-you-can eat dish such as steak, shrimp and fries and snow crab clusters and Prime Rib. And, yes there is a Kid’s Menu.
Take some time to visit Carney’s Corner at 104 W. Pittsburgh Street at Route 66 in Delmont. There is plenty of parking. You can reach them at 724-468-4040.
