For whatever greedy reason, marketing gurus have decided that the best way to get piles of money out of women and children is to show them how stupid their husbands and fathers are every 12 minutes during commercial breaks and every evening during prime-time in their sit-coms. It is amazingly blatant, ignorantly offensive, and grossly wicked.
I don't know any of these stupid, stupid men that they depict in their programming and commercials. The men I know in this life work hard to give their families good things. They dig ditches all day to have a chance to race home in the evening to be with their loved ones. They brave a modern world of endless peril with courage and dignity to show their wives how much they love them. They sacrifice their scarce free time to communities, churches, and youth organizations to improve all of our lives.
I'm getting pretty upset over this nonsense. I wish I had a good argument for these "creative" marketing people, their producers, directors, actors and clients who go along with this wicked subversion of families for monetary gain. But I can't say to them that I, personally, am not stupid. I am stupid in many ways. Most everyone is….. well…. everyone is, period. Except one man. I know a great, great man who lived, and lives still, without doing one thing that we could call "stupid." His name is Jesus. And since He is the only one who is not stupid I think He is the only one qualified to judge what is stupid.
Now I don't know for sure what He thinks about this new Stupid, Stupid Man phenomenon, but I'm sure He understands what it feels like to be mocked and portrayed as being stupid. He came as the Son of God, was executed in humiliating fashion, and then rose again to be doubted still. But you know, He never quit on us, just the way most of the men I know never quit on the people, the country, and the communities they love.
I don't know a lot of stupid, stupid men and, thank God, I don't know a lot of stupid, stupid women or children either. In fact, the women and children in my life are courageous enough to not sit passively in front of the TV while their husbands, fathers, and grandfathers are mocked right in their own living rooms. They make note of the TV program and remove it from their viewing list, they mark the advertiser who goes along with that crap, and they have stopped buying their products. They have brains. And they love their men. I applaud them.
Well anyhow, thank God He sent us one perfect man. Maybe all the rest of us stupid, stupid men will wise up one day and start writing letters to advertisers…. oh sorry… we can't … we are all working sixteen hours a day. Stupid?
I don't know… maybe all the stupid, stupid people work in Hollywood?
