Where do these geniuses and innovators come from? Well, they come from every part of the world; every walk of life. They can be found right in our own neighborhood attending our own local high schools. They can be found in many of our own children.

It was February 1945 and the Allies just reached the Rhine River, we invaded Iwo Jima and the Yalta Conference was held. Walter R. Altfather of Fawn Township was a senior high school student in Berlin-Brothers Valley High School in Somerset County when his draft notice arrived. Still at war with Germany and Japan, men were being drafted to keep our forces at full strength.

AK Seniors Finding A New Family
Gayle Sigler used to spend a lot of time caring for her elderly mother so when she passed away it left a void in her life. During that time she also worked at the Dollar General store in Apollo. Many of her mother’s friends would stop in and talk to her, urging her to come and work at the Apollo Area Senior Center. When she did finally make the decision to come to the center, she found that it was the best decision that she had ever made. They all welcomed her there with open arms “I felt like I had my family again!”
