The Dedicated Keeping the Past Alive
Growing up in Lower Burrell, Dr. Reid Stewart was surrounded by the rich history of the Alle-Kiski area. The first Stewart, Reid's great-great grandfather, moved into the family farm located behind the current Stewart School, back in 1804. Both his grandfather and father were born in the house, however, Reid chuckled and said that he was born in the hospital in New Kensington. A lifetime spent in this family home sparked his interest in history; as he grew, his interest grew into an enthusiasm that spans the decades.

from The Editor Litterbugs and Gossips
Close to the top of my list of things that really annoy me are litterbugs and gossips. As I walked the road near my home this month filling a 55-gallon industrial plastic bag with litterbug trash castoffs, it dawned on me just how closely related the two species are. Litterbugs and gossips both strew their waste products along the roadways of our lives with regard for no one. They are selfish, arrogant, and only you can stop them.

AK Sports The Battle For Best: Wrestling In The Alle-Kiski
You think Pennsylvania was a battleground for the Presidential race? You think battlegrounds here are over for a while? Nope. A new one is just starting, and we have exclusive video interviews with the commanders in the field. Wrestling teams from local schools have now opened up new fronts in the Battle to see who is The Best among hometown favorites. We’ve interviewed the coaches about their teams and the high quality of success here in the A-K. Their comments: “It's contagious,” "Success breeds success," “It’s an intra-valley flavor for sure this time.” We couldn’t say it any better, and you can watch them, in their own words, talk about their squads and seasons in these videos.

Veterans of Freedom Determined To Serve
Smoke billowing over the ship’s bow mingled with silent fog hovering just above the water’s surface. Peering through the thickness, Private Frank Bavetz scoped the skies for enemy aircraft and friendly ships sharing their water space.

Healthy Eating Whole Wheat Nutty Pumpkin Bread
It’s that time of year again where all the goodies and deserts are being made for the holidays. I try to pick things that are a bit healthier or can be made healthier with comparable substitutes. There are great pies, cookies, and breads. Breads are my favorite. Whole wheat as an ingredient reduces carbs and provides a good dose of fiber for your diet.

Alle-Kiski Churches Small Church Has Major Educational Ministry
A far-reaching ministry started with one person who had a passion to educate and change lives. Robert (Bob) M. Rosio began his teaching career in 1965 and spent 12 years teaching French and History at the former Verona High School (now Riverview in Oakmont). As a member of Oakmont Baptist Church, and later, of Dayspring Christian Center, he became involved in plans to establish a Christian school as an alternative to public education. At this point he made the decision to teach in the newly formed Christian Academy.

A-K Dining What's Cooking at Casey's
The Friday we went to visit What’s Cooking At Casey’s restaurant in Oakmont was one of those great Fall days that my wife and I enjoy. We sat down with Rose Henry, who has been along with Bill Henry owners of Casey’s for the past 20 years. She told us of the great history and interesting family story birthed out of hard times that resulted in a restaurant that has been built on family recipes, home made cooking, and perseverance.
