The Dedicated Making Tracks Across The Valley
Now, in the midst of winter, the onset of warmer temperatures is greatly hoped for. In just weeks spring will be here and already people can see the light at the end of the winter tunnel. With the coming improvements in the weather also comes the opportunity for outdoor sports and recreation. One of the greatest treasures in our communities are walking trails. As much as we all enjoy them seldom do we stop and think about the time, hard work, and money that have been invested into them. And this isn’t being done by some large contractor but by people just like us….volunteers. It is the volunteers that make it happen.

Our Local Heritage Before Now
Where do you live? What town or borough? What if it was in the mid-1700s but you still lived in the Alle-Kiski region? You wouldn't have been living in Tarentum, Saltsburg, New Ken, Parnassus, Vandergrift, Shelocta or Springdale. These towns were not around then. In fact, no towns as we even remotely know them were around here then.

AK Sports Breakfast of Champions
What do winners eat for breakfast? What do Alle-Kiski high school athletes who excel eat before they go to school? I'm not sure that I know the specifics, but maybe by the end of this article, I may be able to give you some ideas. But in the meantime this month, here in this column, I'm serving up a heapin' helpin' serving of winners, a smorgasbord overview of area athletes who this winter have broken school records or set outstanding career high-water marks. In fact, we'll just call this lil' buffet a Breakfast of Champions! In no particular order, here's what's on the menu:

“It was a time where a lot of people were joining the service because of the war,” Jim Callender explained as he spoke about the beginning of his career in the Marine Corp. Jim's father fought as a member of the Marines in WWI so it only seemed natural that would be the branch of choice for Jim.

Alle-Kiski Businesses Program Helps Teens In The Work Place
Courtney Flenory of New Kensington knows first hand what it means not to finish high school and try holding a job. Like a small group of teens today she dropped out of high school just before graduation. Then began a cycle of jobs. Her mother urged her to go to CareerLink and use their services to find stable employment. What happened when she visited helped turn her life around, so much so, that today she works for Arbor Education & Training at their Arbor Career Center located in CareerLink.

Alle-Kiski Churches Fox Chapel’s Faith United Methodist Church Growing
It’s hard to believe that ten years ago Fox Chapel United Methodist Church was ready to close it’s doors. In fact, Pastor Larry Fink (now deceased) came with the understanding he was to close the church. That all changed when he discovered the small congregation of little more than a dozen people had hope and faith. Their dedication inspired him to begin a journey that has resulted in a new church facility, a new church name and new members.

A-K Dining Affordable Country Club Dining
When you think of a Country Club you often associate the words exclusive and expensive with it, but Willowbrook County Club restaurant is anything but that. Probably one of the areas biggest secrets is the Club’s great restaurant that has tantalizing entrees, superb service and a relaxing atmosphere set in the country. Pricing is modest, the menu is extensive and there has never been a complaint about the food or service.
