Allegheny Twp., November 09, 2005

Two local men have been named to the all-state Collegiate Fall Baseball team. 2004 Kiski Area grads Shawn Schwarz and Jon Ferrero, who both played on the '04 Cavaliers' baseball squad that finished in the final four in Pennsylvania, are both sophomores on the Westmoreland County Community College (WCCC) Wolfpack baseball team.

Schwarz, a right-handed pitcher/first baseman. and Ferrero, a centerfielder, were named to the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA) All-State Team. Ferrero and Schwarz were a part of the WCCC Wolfpack team who won the PCAA Fall Baseball crown in early October. They both also played for the Pack team last spring that finished fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Mens Baseball World Series in Glens Falls, NY.

Shawn Schwarz
Shawn Schwarz pitched 43.1 innings this fall with 31 strikeouts, and a 2.49 E.R.A. He finished the fall season with a perfect 7-0 won-loss record. Shawn also put up some good numbers at the plate, batting .304, scoring 15 runs and knocking in 21 R.B.I.s.

WCCC Baseball Coach Mike Draghi (who was the PSAA Coach of the Year), said Schwarz "had a good fall for us with the bat and on the mound. He pitched a big game for us against the 2004 National Champs [last spring when the Pack was in the National playoffs]," Draghi continued. "He shut them down. Shawn has proven to be a big-game pitcher."

Jon Ferrero
Jon Ferrero played 28 games in the Fall for the Wolfpack and hit .460 to lead the team in batting. He also scored 38 runs, pounded 16 rbis, and stole 7 bases. Jon was responsible for several key plays against the Lehigh Carbon Community College Cougars in the PCAA Fall Baseball Championship.

Ferrero is the "most quiet and intense player I have ever coached," Coach Draghi noted. "He had a great fall for us, had a lot of big hits for us, and really turned himself into a great player. Jon was the team MVP this fall. He's a good leader."

Both players have several four-year colleges interested in them but have made no commitments. The WCCC Wolfpack begins its Spring Baseball season in late January. The squad is currently in off-season training.
