The American Legion Auxiliary was organized in 1919 by the first National Convention of the American Legion to aid the American Legion in carrying out the great program of peacetime service to America, to which the American Legion is dedicated. Currently, there are approximately 10,500 local Units of the American Legion Auxiliary. As members of the nation's largest patriotic women's organization, we offer a variety of services for our communities. One such service is our knowledge on flag education and etiquette and the wealth of literature available. Local organizations, fellow citizens, and schools look to units for our expertise in ways of promote flag education and a renewed sense of patriotism. We support the rehabilitation of disabled veterans, children and youth activities, disaster relief activities, and adequate defense preparations essential to the safety of our citizens. The Kiski Township Auxiliary celebrates 50 years of service to veterans in October 2003.
We also work side-by-side with the American Legion to sell poppies. These poppies are handmade by disabled veterans in various VA hospitals. The veterans receive a small amount of money for each poppy they assemble. Then all the money collected on Poppy Day is sent back to the hospitals to provide comfort items for the veterans. Poppy Day will be held in the Apollo area on Friday, August 29th, near various local businesses. When you see a representative holding a bunch of poppies, make a donation and wear your poppy with pride! This is something we can all do to support our veterans!
The most recent project of Unit #631 is a Craft Show to be held on Saturday, September 6, 2003 from 10 am to 4 pm, at the Post Home. Besides a variety of craft vendors, the ladies of the Auxiliary will be selling sandwiches, desserts, coffee, etc. We will also have homemade vegetable soup for sale, already canned and processed for storage on your home shelf! Limited indoor and outdoor table space for the Craft Show is still available. Contact Jan Walker at 724-567-7361 by August 15th for further information.
Kiski Township Auxiliary also published a 500-recipe cookbook entitled In Honor of Our Veterans. This is one of those community cookbooks with wonderful tried-and-true recipes! Copies are available at a cost of $10.00.
We also sell flags: 3' by 5' for $20.00 and 4' by 6' for $30.00. These flags are nylon, with stitched stripes and embroidered stars, and made in the USA. We also promote flag etiquette and proper display of the flag. Also, our fundraising efforts include the sale of Marion-Kay spices and vanilla, Rada Cutlery, and dishcloths. Pricing is available by contacting us.
Membership in the American Legion Auxiliary is based on eligibility through a family member who served in any branch of the military. We are always looking for civic-minded ladies to join us in our promotion of service to the veterans. If you are interested in joining us and helping support our veterans, please contact us for further information and an application. For information on any of the above items, please contact Jan Walker at 724-567-7361.
