Washington Township, November 26, 2002

Getting the bear out of the woods proved to be tricky.
A Black Bear was hit by a car in Washington Township at the intersection of Route 66 and Reservoir Road on Sunday. The PA Game Commission came out and had to destroy the bear, but could not get it out of the woods due to the rough terrain. The bear was down about 100 yards into a deep ravine, and the Game Commission requested that the Washington Township Fire Department come to assist in recovering it.

Once out, the bear was put on a truck and taken to the firehall.
The Washington Township Fire Department in a joint effort with the Pennsylvania Game Commission were able to recover the bear. This took approximately 2 hours, and the bear had to be winched out with the fire departments Brush truck and a 4 wheel drive ATV. It was then transported to the firehall. The department used the new Quint truck to lift the bear so the Game Warden could weigh and examine it. The bear maxed out the scale at 360 pounds! The Game Commission then took the bear to Ligonier to their headquarters for further examination.
