New Kensington, PA—Saturday and Sunday, August 4th-5th , 2007 — In its 6th year, walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of the Alle- Kiski Valley. This is an event for the entire community! Free!
Teams of eight to 15 members will gather at Memorial Park, on Saturday and Sunday, August 4th-5th, 2007 starting at 10:00 AM for an overnight relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented team event where participants can walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can include businesses, hospitals, schools, churches, co-workers, club members, family and friends…people from all walks of life, who have gathered donations prior to the event. Visit the Relay For Life of the Alle Kiski Valley web-site at www.acsevents.org/akvrelay, that highlights specific information about the event and cancer related topics. Relay Online is an easy and fun way to accept team registrations and collect credit card donations. Participants can log-on to this Relay website to share personal reasons for Relaying as well as to send out e-mails to friends and family asking for support through participation or monetary donations.
The public is also invited to attend a special Luminaria Ceremony, which will take place after sundown. To honor the community’s cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease, survivors will circle the track rimmed with glowing luminarias while the names of survivors and those lost to the disease are read aloud. The luminaries will be lit on Saturday, August 4th at 9:00 PM to represent these individuals. Luminarias can be purchased for $10 by contacting the American Cancer Society at 1-888-ACS-5445.
Funds raised at Relay For Life will enable the American Cancer Society to support local services and resources for cancer patients and their families. Funds also support critical cancer research and community education programs designed to teach people how to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
Relay For Life events will be held in 60 communities throughout Western Pennsylvania, raising more than $4,952,768 million for the fight against cancer.
