The fatal crash occurred as Bobi Jo Ostrander was traveling west on SR-286 when she hit an icy portion of the roadway. She lost control of her vehicle and left the roadway onto the north berm and then reentered the roadway and crossed into the path of Santo Panarello who was driving a Ford Pickup. Bobi Jo's vehicle was impacted on the passenger side door area. She suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head and chest area.

Life saving procedures were attempted by Life-Stat EMS/Saltsburg but Westmoreland Coroner Jerry W. Fritz pronounced the She dead at the scene. Santo was transported by LIFE?STAT to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for injuries to his arm, back and leg area. The Saltsburg Fire Department provided fire support and traffic control.
