The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would like to invite the public to an information session on the Parks Township Shallow Land Disposal Area, which will taken place on August 28, from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Parks Township Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 social hall on School Street. This session includes an open house with displays available for viewing, special presentations, guest speakers, and a question and answer segment.

The Remedial Investigation stage of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) process for the Parks Township Shallow Land Disposal Area is under way. Valuable information was gathered through interviews conducted in January with former NUMEC and BWXT employees as well as knowledgeable citizens. In addition, historical reports documenting previous work at the land disposal area was reviewed. There were also other procedures done to complete testing.

The next action in the clean up involved field work including surface and subsurface soil sampling, investigation of the disposal trenches, on-site and off-site sediment and surface water sampling, groundwater investigations, and ambient air monitoring.

The purpose of the session is to present the plans for the upcoming fieldwork. In addition, you questions and comments regarding the fieldwork and other aspects of the cleanup will be addressed.
