John Pastorek President and CEO of the Alle-Kiski Health Foundation.
The Alle-Kiski Health Foundation has been working many years toward improving the quality of life for local residents. Although they've managed to make quite an impact, very few people know who they are and are familiar with the services that they provide. According to John Pastorek President and CEO, most people don't know that they have an office in Natrona. Their mission, to improve health, wellness and quality of life for the Alle-Kiski Valley, has been very successful despite lack of exposure. In 1997 when the Allegheny Hospital merged with Allegheny Health and Education Resources Foundation the Alle-Kiski Health Foundation decided to become an independent entity. They were able to preserve the funds that they had and develop those funds into more. Although they are a separate program they still provide support to the Allegheny Valley Hospital and just made a grant offer of ¼ million dollars

The organization has also donated thermal imaging cameras to several fire departments. The Vandergrift #2 Fire Department was the recipient of one of these. The camera helps the firemen locate people in a smoke filled room because it registers body heat. The Natrona Fire Department was also given one of these. The cameras are also helpful for police because they can use the camera to find people in the dark or that are hiding. Another contribution consisted of defibrillators, which were put in police cars, schools and the YMCA. They also trained the police and other individuals to use the machine.

Over the past five years or so they have given over one million dollars away and held drug awareness, cancer and diabetes programs. Healthy Team, which teaches on drugs, alcohol, anti tobacco and having a healthy body image, which is important in the school age years where anorexia or other eating disorders can develop. Another important contribution to teachers is the fact that they are certified by the State Department of Education to provide Act 48 Credits.

On January 21, the Alle-Kiski Health Foundation will be sponsoring a program called 'Healthy Cooking'. It will be held at the Clarion Hotel in New Kensington from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Whether you are cooking for a family of five or maybe a quick meal for yourself, you can cook healthy. Don't miss a live demonstration by Brackenridge Heights Country Club Executive Chef, Regis McGill, and a registered dietician. For additional information or to register, call 724-226-8338.
