Arnold, December 23, 2002

Rev. Joseph Yurko, Jr., Arnold United Methodist Church.
A new program just started at the Arnold United Methodist Church on Leishman Avenue in Arnold just down the street from the Berkey Elementary School. One day a week the church feeds the children in body, soul and spirit. First the children are fed something to eat and then they hear a bible story and get help with their homework. The program lasts around 1 hour and averages twelve children each week. Reverend Yurko said that because of the proximity of the church to the school he was able to see the children leaving the school each day. He said that there would be fights or kids picking on each other. He wanted to give the children something constructive to do after school. This is how the idea of KAIROS Kids was born.

KAIROS is a Greek word that means 'meaningful time' and that is just what Reverend Yurko hopes it will be. Not just for the children but for the 10-15 adults involved as well. At some point Reverend Yurko hopes to expand the program whether making more days a week or making it longer.
