     The  Need  for  Steel:  The  need for  transporting  oil  more
     efficiently  over railroads and pipelines drove a  demand  for
     galvanized  steel. In 1892 the new owners of the Apollo  steel
     mill--of which Captain Jacob Vandergrift was a major partner--
     brought in George McMurtry to run the plant. Realizing he  was
     witnessing  the  beginning of a huge need for steel,  McMurtry
     began   to  study  factory  production,  and  what  made   for
     excellence  in that endeavor. His pursuit of something  better
     than  the best led him to visit industrial towns all over  the
     world.  His need to make the best quality the best way--so  he
     could make the best profit--hinged on keeping the best workers
     satisfied with the best. When the need arose for expansion  of
     the  Apollo mill facilities, he saw an opportunity to put what
     he  had learned into action. The Kiski Valley would get a  new
     addition  to  its  towns  as a result. Read  more  interesting
