OUR LOCAL HERITAGE

A FAR FLOAT: The Pennsylvania Canal, portions of which went
through the AK Valley, was 64 miles long, from Johnstown to
the mouth of the Kiski River on the Allegheny, near Freeport.
That did not include "slackwaters" areas that were dammed up
where the canal boats actually went down the river rather than
in a canal bed. Read more interesting history at Our Local
Heritage at above site. Click on Archives for a list of
history tidbits.

"Dirty Dozen" Tax Scams
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=154293,00.html
The Internal Revenue Service released its latest annual tally
of some of the most notorious tax scams. Dubbed the "Dirty
Dozen," the list includes two new schemes since its
publication last year. The new tricks, "zero wages" and "form
843 tax abatement," comprise scams in which filers use IRS
forms to claim that their tax bills have been wrongly
inflated.

Mayo Clinic: Building a Better Diet
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-diet/NU00190
Perhaps you've noticed that the days of the four basic food
groups - dairy, meat and protein, fruits and vegetables, and
breads and cereals - are long gone. Today, healthy-eating
plans - including the U.S. Department of Agriculture's My
Pyramid -encompass a far wider range of options. Such options
include legumes, whole grains, seeds and nuts, fish, and even
plant oils, such as olive oil. Add in ethnic, religious,
cultural and personal preferences, and you have more options
than ever when planning healthy meals and snacks. Healthy
eating can be presented in a variety of plans, but eating
healthfully doesn't have to be complicated. This Mayo Clinic
site provides some basic principles common to all healthy-
eating plans to help you stay on the path to good health.
National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder [pdf, Real
Player]
http://www.ncptsd.va.gov/
The Department of Veterans Affairs created the National Center
for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in 1989 to address the
needs of veterans with military-related PTSD. Over the past
sixteen years, the Center has created a cornucopia of helpful
resources on this subject, including fact sheets, research
papers, and handbooks. Many of these items are available on
this site, and will be helpful to health care professionals
and those who might have a friend or loved one living with
PTSD.

TODAYS FEATURED WEB SITES
The Fall of Enron [pdf]
http://www.chron.com/news/specials/enron/
The Houston Chronicle has taken on this topic by creating this
rather comprehensive and intelligent look at the fall of this
once-mighty corporation. On the site, visitors can learn about
the events leading up to the companys downfall through a
timeline of events and past news stories created by staff
members at the newspaper. The site also contains a tremendous
amount of material on the current trial of Enron executives
Kenneth Lay and Jeff Skilling. Coverage includes blogs
containing observations from noted attorneys, transcripts of
court documents and testimony, as well as photo galleries.
International Quilt Study Center
http://www.quiltstudy.org/
The International Quilt Study Center has grown to include
research symposia, a graduate program in textile history, and
numerous online resources. Visitors may want to search the
quilt collection online through their helpful search engine.
Users can search by primary pattern, quilt title, quilt maker,
country of origin, and predominant technique. One very
interesting feature of the site is the Quilt of the Month
area, where visitors can learn about some of the Centers most
unique quilts, such as the Chicken Ribbons Quilt from 1913,
which features blocks of blue, red, and white silver printed
ribbons.
The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth
http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/sseop/clickmap/
This site hosts the best and most complete online collection
of astronaut photographs of the Earth from 1961 through the
present.
