        Between 1795-98 salt was discovered about a mile above
     Saltsburg by a woman (Mrs. Deemer) while boiling water from a
      well.  This was the beginning of an industry that made the
        valley one of the leading salt producers in the nation.

     End of the canal…beginning of trail travel
     
     The  railroad was completed to Pittsburgh in 1857.  The canal was
     sold  to the railroad the same year, which began to salvage  much
     of  the canal for usable railroad supplies.  The last canal  boat
     delivered  a  load  of  salt to Blairsville  in  1865.   Soldiers
     leaving  Apollo for the Civil War left by canal boat and returned
     by train.
