                          ___INTERNET NEWS___

     INTERNET MARKS 20th ANNIVERSARY
January 1st was the 20th anniversary of the Internet. It was
on this date that the first 400 or so computers hooked up to
what was then called ARPANET had to switch to a communications
protocol called TCP/IP. It was that means of transferring data
that allowed the World Wide Web to expand and thrive,
basically making the Internet what it is today. Vint Cerf, the
co-inventor of the protocol, says the anniversary is "a major
milestone" for computer users to observe. However, there are
others who insist that the Internet is even older than that.
They say when two computers at the UCLA swapped data across a
15-foot cable; it marked the start of the basic concept behind
     the Internet.

AOL WINS $7 MILLION DOLLAR JUSGEMENT AGAINST 'SPAM RING'
A federal court in Virginia has awarded America Online nearly
$7 million in a case about spam e-mail. The company sued what
it called a "spam ring" that blasted AOL subscribers with junk
e-mail for adult Web sites. The company said the spammers sent
more than 1 billion junk messages. One of the defendants, CN
Productions, already had been ordered in 1999 to pay AOL
nearly $2 million and to not send any more junk messages to
AOL members. Large Internet providers often take spammers to
court and win fat judgments. The judgments often go
     uncollected.
